UVM’s Jan Carney to be Honored at Vermont’s Go Red For Women Luncheon on Jan. 26
The American Heart Association’s (AHA) 10th annual Go Red For Women Luncheon will take place on Thursday, January 26 at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center. With a theme “Change Starts Today,” the luncheon will feature educational breakout sessions, a silent auction, exhibits, inspirational guest speakers, and a heart-healthy lunch.
This event aims to empower women with knowledge and tools to reduce their risks for heart disease and stroke–and protect their health.
The event’s survivor speaker, Denise Rainville of Rutland, Vt., will share her story about surviving a heart attack. While maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, Rainville was looking for ways to lower her cholesterol. She attributed some symptoms to exercise fatigue and muscle tension. She wants women to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, no matter their age or routine.
This year’s Crystal Heart Award recipient is Jan Carney, MD, MPH. Carney is the Associate Dean for Public Health and Professor of Medicine at the Robert Larner, MD College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. She has advocated for several health initiatives including the expansion of health insurance, improved access to health care and policies to reduce tobacco use in Vermont.
Dr. Diann Galeema is the event’s keynote speaker. Dr. Gaalema is an assistant professor of psychiatry and psychology at the Vermont Center on Behavior and Health at the University of Vermont. She has focused her career on measuring and changing a variety of behaviors. Her current research includes how to increase healthy behaviors following major cardiac events.
Two educational breakout sessions will be offered. Kim DuBrul, a Certified Life Coach, will provide insights on how attendees can identify their strengths to get more out of their lives. Brierley Wright, Nutrition Editor at Eating Well Magazine, will present on healthy changes women can make in their diets.
